Surpise Guests
Happy Mother's Day to All
Yesterday evening, we get a call in the style "Hello Ill be coming over tomorow for supper as we had discussed!"
I dont recall ever having this discussion with our guest but I figure that it most likely O that had made plans that he forgot to tell me about, or that he forgot all together. So I spent last eve ning vacuuming our home and putting away all my knitting and magazines that have been lying around. This morning I finish the laundry, clean our bedrooms and make a meal plan for supper. Spent the afternoon making a lasagna and a big nice chocolate cake!! Cake two of my "best cake ever" project
The results of my first cake: disappointing . I mean it was an okay cake...but I dont want an okay cake; I want a wonderful cake. So today I was making a chocolate cake accompanied with a chocolate buttercream frosting, recipes from America's Test Kitchen : Family Cookbook which is, in my opinion, a very good cookbook. It was everything, its tasty and simple. It was given to me by my good friend (blog: In The Life of Wifey) who I dont think knew the treasure she was giving away. I might buy a copy and give it to her to thank her for it!
So far, the frosting is way creamier and lighter than the first one. My only ick with chocolate frosting is that it might be harder to decorate, but hey its mothers day and I felt like chocolate frosting! The cake seems fluffy and its quite tasty (dont tell my guest but I had a little chunk from the center of the bottom layer).
Oh and luckily for me, guess whose showing up: THE SUN!!!!
Truly yours,
Cyn

Cake Results
The cake was dry, the frosting tasting more like butter than sugar. It was very deceiving but that didnt stop me from eating almost the entire thing over the past few days. Its been raining here. Since monday we have had 4 hours of "sunshine". SO of course my son is restless and I dont blame him either.
To pass time and lift the mood it's Florence and The Machine with a big piece of cake. This week will end and I just can't wait.

Testing out cakes!
My son is going to be 18months old! For his first birthday, we had decided for a simple brunch with immediate family. Since I grew up not having birthday party, I have to admit that I was very intimidated with the idea of throwing a huge party. I just didnt know where to begin.
This year, I've chosen to throw a little party. We live quite far from civilization, so I figured it would be a nice occasion to see all the people that we love but that find our home rather far for simple afternoon tea.
I figured that 6 months of prep time would give me time to figure it out. O made the invites with his programmer skills! They are lovely, all we need is to print them out and figure out who to invite (rather important, eh!). So now, I am focusing on making a cake. Preferably i'd like to make a thomas and friends cake. Now, I cant have a pretty cake that tastes like crap so its off to the ovens.
Tonight, im trying Devils food cake from the Good Home Cookbook as well as their buttercream recipe. I figured I'd start basic and work it up. The cake has finished baking, the time inicated in the book was way off, 40 minutes would have burnt my cake. 25-30 are plenty enough. They look nice, but they are rather flat. Im not sure wether or not this is normal....ive never seen devils food cake (shocking, i know). I guess i'll just have to make and eat more chocolate cakes to find out ;) Im so disappointed lol

doing it all?
I have just receive an acceptance letter to CEGEP. Even though, I thought i had renounced to the idea of going back to school in order to b a full time stay at home wife and mom, I find myself contemplating a return to the school benches. I feel so confused. Oli urges me to go back saying that I love school so much that it would be a shame that I didnt take this oppurtunity. He alos says that having a degree could be usefull if ever something happened to him *knocks on wood*. Plus he says it could be great for when all our kids will be off to school and thats its only part time, so he would get time with his son.
Im just worried i'll have to much to do. Too much housework, too much schoolwork, too much juggling that i won't have time to smell the coffee. I just dont want to be that working mom that forgets that her kids are waiting impatiently at home.
I think that this is one of the greatest dilema as a mom. Is it better to stay home and enjoy the small things knowing that the futur could be less stable, or ignoring the small details to look at the big picture?

Only the Lonely
My love works from home as a computer geek (yes thats his job, being a geek :P )
And when hes home i often think, boy would i love if hed work elsewhere, i could clean, cook and do my things without having to take care of him; Not have him stop me as I try to clean the bathroom to steal a kiss. Not have him close the tap as i try to fill up the sink to do the dishes so he can tell me an internet anecdote. Or not have him laugh out loud while i try tp put our kid down for a nap.
Yesterday he left for a two day business trip, and GOD am I lonely. I have nothing to do. I time to do 5 laundry loads yesterday, pretty much washing any cloth that fell under my hand. Today i might just launder the curtains.
My home has never been so quiet, i have TV on to feel like less of a looser. Im afraid i might start to watch Martha Stewart :S
Please come home to annoy me again Oli

The Martha Stewart Show
I used to be a huge Martha fan. Loved how she had great DIY's that were so simple and useful. But ever since i have seen her show, i can only fall alseep to her monotoneous, nasal voice. She makes crochet and knitting seem boring and makes cooking seem to be an art reserved to prissy old tax-evading ladies.
Needless to say, i am not a fan
